GAMES & ACTIVITIES:

Box Cars
Materials:  A large cardboard box (45cm x 28cm x 25cm); four large paper plates; two small foil plates; six large paper fasteners; a small foam meat tray; a length of heavy cord or string long enough to attach at waist level and run over the child's shoulders to make a harness for "wearing" the car; masking tape; markers; paint; and brushes.
What to Do:  Remove the top flaps and cut a hole large enough to fit over a child's hips in the bottom of each box.  Let the children paint their cars.  When the paint is dry, help them punch holes near the corners of the open end of the box where the wheels will go.  Poke a hole in the centre of each paper plate and attach the plates through the holes in the box with paper fasteners.  Cover the points of the paper fasteners inside the box with masking tape.  In the same manner, attach the foil pie plates to the front of the box car as headlights.  The Children can print their name on a foam tray and tape the license plate to the back of the box car.  Now attach the harness.  With sharp scissors, punch a hole at about the mid point on either side of the opening on the top of the box.  Thread cord through one hole and double knot it on the inside so it won't slip through.  Ask the child to step into the car and hold it up.  Run the cord up and around the back of the neck and down into the other hole to get a comfortable length.  Knot the end inside.  No doubt, the children will be climbing into their cars and starting to drive around as soon as they're ready.  Before they completely run out of gas, you might want to make roads on the floor with masking tape and review some bike safety rules and turn signals.  Mark a few pedestrian crossings, and have the leader "police" the action by pulling over drivers who don't signal turns or stop at intersections.

Covered Bridge
Found in New Brunswick & Nova Scotia
Materials: Each covered bridge will require two or more empty, rinsed, dry 500 ml milk cartons, red & black construction paper, scissors, glue, tape, toy cars.
What to Do: Cut out opposite ends of both milk cartons. Tape the two cartons together, end to end. The bridge can be made longer by attaching more cartons. Glue the red construction paper on the sides and use the black paper to make the roof. Drive the cars through the bridge.
