adventures of their dragon. You can even write the stories down, and collect
them all into one big storybook.

STORIES:
The Laughing Dragon
(the book is by Kenneth
Mahood) Story takes place in Japan. As the Emperor was about to eat his
morning egg, out jumped a little smiling dragon. The Emperor names him
Hojo and he becomes the Imperial Pet. He makes himself very useful by cooking
food, heating the palace, etc. However, every time Hojo laughed, out came
flames. The Imperial Physician tried everything to put out Hojo's fire.
One day, the Palace caught on fire and Hojo was sent to a small island.
On this island there lived a turtle, George. Hojo and George became good
friends. Because of the warmth of Hojo's fire, the island became a beautiful
place where all the birds from Japan migrated to. They told Hojo how Japan
was having the worst winter ever. George tries to teach Hojo to hold his
breath ... inflating like a balloon, Hojo floats towards Japan. They reach
Japan where Hojo rescues everyone.
FOOD SUGGESTIONS:
Dragon Breath Snack
Provide a mild salsa and
chips to the children. Encourage them to breathe "dragon fire" if the salsa
feels warm in their mouth. Make sure to provide plenty of water and/or
juice!
TIPS/NOTES:
Read the story of The Paper
Bag Princess. Have the children make a dragon puppet from a paper bag.
Read the story Puff the Magic
Dragon, watch the video, sing the song. This is always a great favorite
of children.
Talk about and look at Chinese
dragons. Chinese dragons are symbols of luck, prosperity and protection.
You could make a Chinese dragon in your daycare by using a paper mache
head and a decorated sheet. A really fun project that could get all the
children involved.
Older children might enjoy
the movie "Dragonheart."
Provide several pictures
of dragons for inspiration and have children draw their own dragons.
"Dragon Tales" on PBS is
a very good show for the younger set. Tape several episodes, and show them
to the children, discuss the problems solved in each episode.
