ROAD
SAFETY THEME
CRAFTS:
Traffic Lights
Make stop and go lights
out of shoeboxes. Tape the lid to the bottom of the box. Cover with black
construction paper and have children place green, yellow and red circles
in correct order on the box. Red circles on top, yellow middle, green on
bottom.
GAMES & ACTIVITIES:
911 Telephone Acting
Have a few phones in the
class, and go over with the children what to say when the phone rings and
the child answers. Teach them the proper and safe things to do, like: not
giving their name, telling the person on the phone where they live, or
if they are alone. You can even have each child come up to the phone ,
as you pretend to ring the phone & be the stranger. This is also a
good time to go over dialing 911 in case of an emergency.
Bike and Pedestrian Safety
Talk with the children about
crossing the street. You need to look both ways, follow traffic signals
and look for the white lines to walk between.
Bicycle Rodeo
Set up a bike rodeo in a
school yard or empty parking lot with assistance from the local police,
safety association or your local detachment of the RCMP. Set up these check
stations: riding skills, how to do a bike safety check, street sign identification,
and the rules of the road. At all times emphasize the use of bike helmets!
Also check out information on the Flashback Safety Education Program.
Block Play
Provide the children with
bikes, cars, and people in the block area. Encourage the children to create
a neighborhood, and follow the safety rules.
Crossing Guard
Provide the children with
a paper stop sign, and bright orange crossing guard shirt. Let the children
take turns pretending to be a crossing guard.
Flashback
For this activity you will
need: a dark field, bright or fluorescent clothing, a flashlight and something
reflective.
Begin to show your group
the truth about the visibility of fluorescence by wearing bright, or fluorescent
clothes in an unlit park, or other safe location. One person at a time
should act as the "tester" and have a flashlight held up to one eye and
pointing straight in front of him. This imitates what a driver sees from
behind his headlights. One brightly coloured Beaver should then walk
away from the tester until she can no longer be seen. She should then look
down at themselves and see that she is still lit up by the flashlight.
This would be the point where you think that a car sees you, but in fact
you are still invisible to the motorist. The Beaver should then back away
from the tester until she is no longer lit up by the flashlight. At this
point she can expose a reflective strip, sticker, or flashback product
(stop signs and stickers), which will make her visible again to the tester,
or motorist. She can then continue to back up until the tester can no longer
see any reflection (up to 100 m/325' or more!). This is a good first introduction
to fluorescent vs. reflective material.
I Spy a Sign Game
Show the children a variety
of different signs. Then give clues.. like "I spy a sign with a that is
a rectangle." Keep giving clues until the children can tell you which sign
you have chosen.
Pedestrian Walk
Place masking tape on the
floor, to represent a cross walk. The children can walk between the lines
or roll play.
Red Light, Green Light
Have the children run around
and someone yells out, "red light" and the children have to stop what they
are doing until they hear "green light."
Stop Signs
Cut out hexagon shapes from
white paper. Have the children color or paint them red. Then write the
word "stop" and glue a popsicle stick to the paper to create a stop sign.
Sign Match Game
Obtain pictures of the signs.
Make two color copies of each (they need to be about the same size) Then
glue each sign to an index card and play memory
