SPY THEME
CRAFTS:
Spy Glass
Each child will need a toilet
paper (or paper towel) roll, construction paper, glue or tape, and string
or yarn. Cover the cardboard roll with construction paper. Decorate with
a skull and crossbones, if desired. Add string so the kids can hang them
around their necks.
GAMES & ACTIVITIES:
Catch
That Thief!
Equipment:
A small object to represent a potato
How
to Play: Have the players stand in a circle. Select one person
to be the thief and ask her to leave the room. The farmer is then
chosen and the "potato" is placed in the centre of the circle. The
thief is called in and enters the centre of the circle. The goal
is to steal the potato and escape from the circle before being touched
by the farmer. Since the thief doesn't know who the farmer is, leaving
the circle is more difficult since she could be tagged from any direction.
The farmer is not allowed to move from his position until the thief has
grabbed the apple in order to keep his identity a mystery. If the
farmer succeeds in tagging the thief, he becomes the thief for the next
round. If the thief succeeds in leaving the circle untagged, she
may choose the thief for the next game.
Code
Breaking
Think
up a number of symbols (e.g. #, $, %) and tell the kids what alphabet letter
each symbol represents. Then give a coded message using the symbol. Let
the kids match the letters to create words. Keep the message simple since
the kids are just learning to read.
Examine Fingerprints
Supply each child with two
pieces of small white paper and a single colored non-toxic stamp pads.
Have each child make one fingerprint on each of the two pieces of paper.
Write the child's name on the front of one (#1) and the back of the other
(#2). Start with a pair of fingerprints (#1 and #2 that match), and an
extra #1. Have the child try to figure which of the two #1's the #2 matches.
Then add more #1's to choose from.
I Spy
Everyone sits in a circle.
One child is asked to pick an object in the room and say, “I Spy with my
pirate’s eye, something that is ....” (a colour or other appropriate clue).
Go around the circle, giving each player a chance to guess. The one who
correctly figures out the answer is the next child to choose an object.
Tin
Can Phones
Use
two metal cans and about 3 metres of string to make tin can phones.
