WEATHER THEME

CRAFTS:

Cloud Collages
Color a picture on blue paper and glue cotton balls for clouds, glue on rick rack for lightning or cut with zig zag scissors.

Rain Pictures
Start out with white construction paper and water-based markers. Place the papers out in the rain for 1-2 minutes (you could also spritz with a water sprayer if the rain won't cooperate). Bring the papers in and blot them dry with a paper towel, leave them to dry thoroughly. The effect is beautiful.

Sun Rocks
Mix powdered tempera paint with salt or sand and pour it into shaker containers. Give each child a rock that has a smooth surface. Give them Q-tips to use to draw suns on their rocks with white glue. Then let them sprinkle the yellow salt or sand over the glue.

Solar Etching
Place objects on top of a piece of paper. Put the paper in the sun. The light will bleach the paper lighter except for where the object was.

GAMES & ACTIVITIES:

Field Trip
Visit a radio station or tv station and talk to the weatherman. Many stations will setup a field trip so the children can see the radar, weather maps and watch a "newscast with the weather report"

Lion or Lamb?
Materials:  A calendar
What to Do:  Introduce the group to the March folklore of "In like a lion, out like a lamb" or vice versa.  If the first of March is a nice day, place a picture of a lamb on the calendar.  Continue to record the weather using pictures of lions and lambs to describe it.  Predict whether March will go out like a lion or a lamb.  Even have the members
guess weekly what the weather will be like for each future meeting.  Keep a record and see who are the luckiest people when predicting weather.

Make a Weathervane
Let the kids make their own weathervane.  Have them find a stick about a half inch in diameter in 6 inches long.  Then look for a twig about 1/8 inch in diameter and 8 inches long.  Poke a pan with a round head through the center of the plague and into the top and of the stick so that it looks like T. Add a dry leaf to the end of the twig.  On a windy day let the kids take their weathervane's outside.  First established which way they feel the wind is coming from.  Does the air all on the weathervane point in the same direction?  What direction is it?

Rain Gauge
Put a rain gauge outside to measure the amount of rain or snow.

Thermometer
Teach the older children to read a thermometer to check the outdoor temperature daily.

SONGS:

Mr. Sun
Oh, Mr. Sun, sun, Mr. Golden sun
Please shine down on me.
Oh, Mr. Sun, sun, Mr. Golden Sun
Hiding behind that tree.
These little children are asking you
Please come out so we can play with you.
Oh, Mr. Sun, sun, Mr. Golden sun
Please shine down on me.
